As the second largest state in the country, the diversity of Texas makes it one of the most exciting prospects as a wedding location. From the historically significant, sprawling properties with old-world charm, to the contemporary, state-of-the-art facilities of some of the world’s largest event spaces, and everything between, they have it all, ideal for residents and destination weddings alike.
Texas is split by Interstate 35, and to the east of this major highway is a subtropical climate, while on the west is a desert, both of which feature gorgeous surroundings, romantic escapisms, and skyline-framed nuptials.
Texas weddings are most commonly hosted in the larger cities due to the number of people and options therein, with the likes of Houston, Austin, San Antonio, and Dallas being particular hotspots. With that being said, the woodlands of East Texas, the rolling hills of Central Texas, and beach weddings overlooking the Gulf of Mexico are also popular.
Houston is the largest city in Texas and the fourth largest in the United States. Within the city limits is where you’ll find incredible modern luxuries and some of the country’s top services and designers. This is the perfect setting for a sophisticated wedding brimming with glamor and glitz.
At the state capital, lovebirds can experience one of the liveliest cultures of artists, musicians, and innovators the world over by having a wedding in Austin, famous for its motto “Keep Austin Weird.” A wedding has the opportunity to be one of the most unique your friends and family have ever seen, with center pieces crafted quirky by local artisans and a wedding band of hip folk music talent.
San Antonio is a lush urban adventure waiting to happen, a place where a winter wedding notoriously has the most beautiful weather and a riverboat cruise wedding never disappoints. Whether inside or outside the city limits, this Texas gem has venues that tower over the metropolis alongside quiet sites delicately situated under a shady tree.
Historically significant and wonderfully diverse, Dallas plays host to some of the most exceptional and world-famous places to tie the knot in the entire country. From aisles covered by a line of trees to awe-inspiring architecture with few rivals, Dallas is a one-of-a-kind haven to share a "Texan wedding" with your significant other. Marry in front of stained glass windows or in a fairytale-like forest.
Where wedding prices vary significantly depending on the season in northern states, Texas prices fluctuate less dramatically. You may find slightly higher rates in the spring and fall months, but seasons are more likely to affect venue availability rather than price. In the summer, temperatures tend to be very hot, especially when considering outdoor weddings in formal wear, and in the winter, the inclement weather and colder temperature are hard to predict, so the demand for weddings decreases during those times of year.
While heavily dependent on the location, services, and offerings, the average cost per person in and around larger cities, like the ones mentioned, range from $200-$225 per guest, whereas you can expect to pay around $100 or less per guest in West Texas.
In addition to the cost per guest, venues typically charge a 20% service fee, as well as an 8.25% Texas sales tax. Each percentage is taken from the initial cost, so the service fee will not be affected by sales tax and vice versa.
When applying for a Texas marriage license, you will need:
A valid ID (Drivers License, Birth Certificate, Passport, Military ID)
Your Social Security number (Card not required)
In addition to the above, you will need $31-$71 in cash depending on the county for a license fee, which can be waived in its entirety if you both take an 8-hour premarital preparation course. Also, neither you nor your spouse need be a Texas resident for a marriage license.
