Located in the Mount Vernon neighborhood, bordering downtown Baltimore, the First Unitarian Church is a striking building standing out against the city’s darker color scheme. The building evokes references to the famed Pantheon in Rome, with a pediment and Doric columns gracing its façade. The Romanesque arches make for an intimidating, majestic entrance. The church was built in 1818 and the interior is a sight to behold. The sanctuary boasts beautiful Tiffany windows and an exquisite Tiffany mosaic above the alter depicting the Last Supper. Leonardo’s “Last Supper,” to be exact. The half dome continues the reference to the Pantheon, one of the most replicated architectural masterpieces in the world, with its coffers, but no oculus. A Henry Niemann organ sits on the balcony. For smaller ceremonies (the sanctuary seats up to 350), Enoch Pratt Parish Hall accommodates just 100 but is still a beautiful space. With its grandeur and classic architecture, the First Unitarian Church of Baltimore offers a unique space that will take you back in time, even in the midst of a modern city.
