In 1964, the first bricks of Myriad Botanical Gardens were laid when renowned architect I.M. Pei was commissioned by city leaders, including oil and gas pioneer Dean A. McGee, to create a revitalization plan for downtown Oklahoma City. Pei included in his plan a garden area modeled after the Tivoli Gardens in Copenhagen, Denmark. After a national competition, the New York architectural firm Conklin & Rossant was chosen to start construction and garden’s infrastructure was built, including the base of the cylindrical conservatory and tunnel.
